Current Fellows, 2024-25

Adams AdeosunAdams Adeosun (MFA: University of Iowa) is the 2024-2025 Carol Houck Smith Fiction Fellow. They are a writer from Nigeria whose work has appeared in magazines and anthologies including Transition, the Offing, Catapult, Isele, Limbe to Lagos: Nonfiction from Cameroon and Nigeria, and Rele Gallery’s Five Years of Young Contemporaries. Their poetry chapbook, If the Golden Hour Won’t Come For Us, is forthcoming from Akashic Books’ New-Generation African Poets box set. They are a 2024 MacDowell fellow.

Jackie ChalghinJackie Chalghin (MFA: University of Wisconsin-Madison) is the 2024-2025 Hoffman-Halls Emerging Artist Fellow in Fiction. Her work was long-listed for the 2024 DISQUIET prize. She is the recipient of the Johanna Garfield Prize for Nonfiction Creative Writing and the Richard Knowles Teaching Award.

Rickey Fayne (MFA: Michener Center at UW-Austin) is the 2023-2025 Mendota Fellow in Fiction. Originally from rural West Tennessee, he holds an MA in English from Northwestern University and an MFA in Fiction from the Michener Center for Writers at UT Austin. His short stories have appeared in American Short Fiction, Guernica, The Sewanee Review, and Joyland. His first novel, All God’s Children, is forthcoming from Little, Brown in 2025.

Audrey Gradzewicz

Audrey Gradzewicz (MFA: Purdue University) is the 2024-2025 Ronald Wallace Poetry Fellow. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the Pennsylvania State University, where she focused on the poetics and materiality of medieval and early modern texts. Originally from Buffalo, New York, her work has appeared in The FiddleheadCimarron ReviewSmartish Pace, and The Penn Review, among others. She serves as poetry editor for The Baltimore Review. 

Michael Kaplan (MFA: University of Iowa) is the 2024-2025 James C. McCreight Fiction Fellow. He is a writer and also other things, who is trying and failing and trying again. He is grateful to The New England Review, Boulevard, The Michigan Quarterly Review Online, The Florida Review Online, and others, for publishing his work. He is grateful to the Magid Center for the Iowa Writers’ Room Fellowship. He is grateful to his friend, Alex Denny, for convincing him to quit baseball and start reading poetry instead.

Winniebell Xinyu Zong

Winniebell Xinyu Zong (MFA: Cornell University) is the 2024-2025 Jay C. and Ruth Halls Poetry Fellow. She is a Chinese poet and chapbook editor at Newfound Press. She was the 2024 poetry winner of Meridian’s Elizabeth Alexander Creative Writing Award, a recipient of the Mellon Fellowship for the Urban Justice Lab, and a 2023 semi-finalist for the Key West Literary Seminar Scotti Merrill Award. Her recent poems have appeared in Verse Daily, Poetry Daily, swamp pink, The Southern Review, among others, and are anthologized with Haymarket Books and GASHER Press. Nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best New Poets, Best of Net, and AWP’s Intro Journals Project, Zong teaches creative writing as a lecturer at Cornell University. Zong believes in a free Palestine in our lifetimes and denounces all forms of imperial occupation and complicity.

2023-2024

Elijah BeanElijah Bean (MFA: Columbia University) is the 2023-2024 Ronald Wallace Poetry Fellow. He is a poet and graphic designer from Huntsville, Alabama, whose poems have appeared in the Boston Review and Callaloo. He holds a Masters of Architecture from Parsons School of Design, and he interchangeably backbones his creative process and teaching strategies with literature, visual art, and ethnography.

Sadia HassanSadia Hassan (MFA: University of Mississippi) is the 2023-2024 Jay C. and Ruth Halls Poetry Fellow. She is a southern-raised Somali writer whose work has appeared in Hayden’s Ferry Review, Poetry Northwest, BRINK, Georgia Review, and the Academy of American Poets, among others. Her chapbook Enumeration was selected by Kwame Dawes and Chris Abani as part of the New Generation African Poets series. Hassan is currently working on a debut collection of poetry.

Gothataone MoengGothataone Moeng (MFA: University of Mississippi) is the 2023-2024 Carol Houck Smith Fiction Fellow. She is the author of the story collection Call and Response (Viking). She was a 2022-2023 Fiction Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and a 2018-2020 Stegner Fellow in Fiction at Stanford University. Her writing has also received fellowships and support from Tin House, where she was a 2019 Summer Workshop scholar, and from A Public Space, where she was a 2016 Emerging Writer Fellow. Her writing has appeared in Ploughshares, the Virginia Quarterly Review, American Short Fiction, One Story, A Public Space and the Oxford American, amongst others. She was born in Serowe, Botswana.

Mandy Moe Pwint TuMandy Moe Pwint Tu (MFA: University of Wisconsin-Madison) is the 2023-2024 Hoffman-Halls Emerging Artist Fellow in Poetry. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Longleaf Review, Guernica, Beloit Poetry Journal, among others, and has been supported by the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. She is the author of two poetry chapbooks, Monsoon Daughter (Thirty West Publishing House, 2022) and Unsprung (Newfound, 2023). She is from Yangon, Myanmar.

Ada ZhangAda Zhang (MFA: Iowa Writers’ Workshop) is the 2023-2024 James C. McCreight Fiction Fellow. Her short stories have appeared in A Public Space, McSweeney’s, Alaska Quarterly Review, and elsewhere. In 2023, she was selected as a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35” Honoree. Her first book The Sorrows of Others appeared in 2023 from A Public Space Books.

2022-2023

 Steven Espada Dawson

Steven Espada Dawson (MFA: Purdue University) was the 2022-2023 Jay C. and Ruth Halls Fellow in Poetry. He is the son of a Mexican immigrant and a 2021 Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellow. His poems appear or are forthcoming in the Adroit Journal, Guernica, Ninth Letter, POETRY, Split Lip, and Waxwing.

Yalitza Ferreras (MFA: University of Michigan) was the 2022-2023 Carol Houck Smith Fiction Fellow. She received a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award and is a recent Steinbeck Fellow at San Jose State University. Winner of the 2020 Bellevue Literary Review prize in fiction, her stories have also appeared in Best American Short Stories, Kenyon Review, The Southern Review, Aster(ix) Journal, Colorado Review and elsewhere.

Chessy NormileChessy Normile (MFA: Michener Center for Writers, UT Austin) was the 2022-2023 Ronald Wallace Poetry Fellow. Her first book, Great Exodus, Great Wall, Great Party, was selected by Li-Young Lee for the 2020 APR/Honickman First Book Prize. She edits a zine series called Girl Blood Info.

Amanda Rizkalla

Amanda Rizkalla (MFA: University of Wisconsin) was the 2022-2023 Hoffman-Halls Emerging Artist Fellow in Fiction. Her work is published in No Tokens JournalThe Esthetic Apostle, and the fiction anthology of Allegory Ridge. A graduate of Stanford University, she has been awarded the Bocock/Guerard Fiction Prize, the William Woo Award for Opinions Writing, and the Kemper Knapp graduate fellowship.

Taymour Soomro

Taymour Soomro (PhD: University of East Anglia) was the 2022-2023 James C. McCreight Fiction Fellow. He is a Pakistani writer whose debut novel Other Names for Love is forthcoming from FSG in 2022, and whose short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker and The Southern Review. He has published a textbook on law with Oxford University Press, and he is the co-editor of the anthology Letters to a Writer of Colour: Fourteen Authors on Craft, Race and Culture, forthcoming from Random House in 2023.
