courses & Prerequisites
Undergraduates who satisfy the following prerequisites may register for creative writing courses online. Undergraduates who do not meet the prerequisites may compete to gain admission to a workshop (even if it appears closed online) by submitting a writing sample in accordance with the directions here.
- English 203: Creative Writing: Beginning Fiction and Poetry Workshop
Prereqs: 6 credits of literature. This course is open to sophomores only. It does not count for credit toward the English Major with an Emphasis in Creative Writing. - English 300: Creative Writing: Fiction and Poetry Workshop
Submission of a writing sample. This course cannot be repeated for credit toward the English Major with an Emphasis in Creative Writing. - English 301: Creative Writing: Intermediate Fiction Workshop
3 credits of creative writing (English 203, 300-307) with a grade of at least a 3.0, or submission of writing sample. - English 302: Creative Writing: Intermediate Poetry Workshop
3 credits of creative writing (English 203, 300-307) with a grade of at least 3.0, or submission of a writing sample. - English 303: Creative Writing: Advanced Fiction Workshop
3 credits of English 301 or 303 with a grade of at least 3.5, or submission of a writing sample. - English 305: Creative Writing: Advanced Poetry Workshop
3 credits of English 302 or 305 with a grade of at least 3.5, or submission of a writing sample. - English 307: Creative Writing: Special Topics Workshop
3 credits of 300-level creative writing (English 300-307) with a grade of at least 3.5, or submission of writing sample.
Note: English 307 is not offered every semester. Past topics have included playwriting, "Writing the Body," African-American Poetics, the memoir, and creative nonfiction.
- English 695: Directed Creative Writing Thesis
Senior English majors with 9 credits of 300-level creative writing (English 300-307), or the consent of the Program Director. This course is offered primarily in the spring semester. Students who plan to graduate in December or who have other conflicts may apply to the Program Director for permission to take the course in the fall.
