Overview of Programs

The Program in Creative Writing sponsors and administers the programs described below. All our information about these programs is on this website. You are welcome to contact the directors of the programs via email with any questions you may still have after reading the information on the site. The Program in Creative Writing does not offer brochures or other printed material.

The Undergraduate Program

All undergraduates in the University are eligible to take creative writing classes, to attend the Program's readings and literary events, and volunteer to work on The Madison Review. Undergraduate students who are English majors may graduate with an emphasis in creative writing by taking three level 300 creative writing workshops and completing English 695: Directed Study in Creative Writing. Information can be found on the undergraduate program page of this website. The Director of the Undergraduate Program is Professor Ronald Wallace. Questions about class registration should be directed to the Program Coordinator, Ron Kuka.

The MFA Program

The Program in Creative Writing offers a Master of Fine Arts program in fiction or poetry for persons holding an undergraduate degree. Information can be found on the graduate program page of this website. The Director of the MFA Program is Associate Professor Judith Claire Mitchell.

The Creative Writing Minor for PhD Students

The Program in Creative Writing offers an internal Creative Writing Minor for University of Wisconsin-Madison PhD Students in the Department of English's Literary Studies, Compostion and Rhetoric, and English Language and Linguistics programs and an an external Creative Writing Minor for University of Wisconsin-Madison PhD students outside the English Department. Information can be found on the graduate program page of this website. Students with questions about the external minor should contact Associate Professor Judith Claire Mitchell. Students with questions about the internal minor should contact the Director of Graduate Studies.

The Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing's Fellowship Program

The Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing annually awards up to six fellowships to writers of fiction and poetry and one fellowship to mid-level playwrights. Information can be found on the fellowships page of this website. The Director of the Institute is Professor Jesse Lee Kercheval.
